The familiar weight of the tools in Maya's hands was a balm. The rhythmic clang of the hammer against the metal was her symphony. The workshop, normally filled with the gruff instructions of her mentor, Mr. Ito, was silent. She felt a peaceful quiet, a comfortable stillness. She needed to run some ideas by him, some ideas that were sparking inside her.

She picked up a new piece of metal, a gleaming sheet of titanium. It was the material she wanted to work with for her big project. She looked around for Ito. She called out his name, but only silence answered. She walked over to his usual chair, where he had left a simple note. On it, a brief message. Her stomach felt empty.
